About Brett
Professor
Brett has spent 15 years teaching hundreds of students at four universities, including George Washington University. A well-respected professor, he knows what it is like to write a lesson plan, deal with students and their technology, and find time to grade schoolwork.

Coach
Brett has been a baseball coach for more than a decade, volunteering countless hours at parks and fields across Montgomery County, teaching kids the fundamentals of baseball–and occasionally, lessons about life. It has helped him develop deep roots in our community.

Small Businessman
and Political Pro
Working in politics on the local, state, and federal levels, Brett’s career has been about building coalitions to get things done. Brett worked as a congressional staffer, and has since gone on to start his own consulting firm, The Maccabee Group. The company has helped campaigns, organizations and businesses across 40 states and two continents.

Dad
Brett has been a Montgomery County Public Schools parent for 15 years, with his three kids attending Seven Locks Elementary, Cabin John Middle School and Churchill High School. His youngest is now in high school, so he still has skin in the game.

Lowering Class Sizes:
The current student-to-teacher ratios we are seeing in our classrooms are a disservice to our students, families, and educators alike. As a public school parent, Brett knows how ballooning class sizes have negatively impacted students and their families. As a Board Member, he will lead MCPS in finding innovative ways to resource, recruit, train and deploy new educators.
Back-To-Basics
We need a return to accountable, competent leadership on the School Board focused on the basic needs of our students and school communities. Previous leadership of Montgomery County Public Schools failed regarding capital expenditures, in properly vetting school employees, and in properly paying staff, all while class sizes increased. This is unacceptable. Our educators, students, and families deserve better leadership.
Brett will focus on addressing some of the most basic needs facing Montgomery County Public Schools. He will work to make sure our schools are up to code, backgrounds are checked so our kids are kept safe and make sure our educators and staff are looked after.
Forward-facing AI Policy:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t coming, it is already here. We need our schools to recognize this and prepare our kids for the future. Brett will push for a modern curriculum which will help familiarize students with AI without them becoming overly reliant on it.
For students and teachers, that means more work done in the classroom, rather than homework assignments that are more easily accomplished by their friend, ChatGPT. That requires cooperation between the entire school system. As a college professor, Brett sees the proliferation of AI work grow each year. As a Board Member, he will work with all stakeholders to implement a policy that is beneficial to our children.
Fighting Hate
We must stem the rise of hate in our country, including in our public schools. Brett knows that our schools should be inclusive for all students, fostering community among students of backgrounds, faiths, and families.
Unfortunately, we have seen a surge in antisemitic incidents, including the synagogue and high school his family attends. On the Board, Brett will advocate for new policies to mitigate this increase, foster community, and allow room for responsible debate and dissent.
No child in Montgomery County should be subjected to any kind of hate, be it antisemitism, racism, Islamophobia or homophobia. Brett is running to be their voice on the School Board, to make sure that we hear them, and protect them from bigotry of any kind.
ISSUES
I’m running for School Board because we need new, accountable leadership, focused on lowering class sizes, creating a responsible and forward-looking AI policy, addressing hate in our schools, and getting the basics right.
